Plask vs GA4 Custom Alerts (Insights): Which Catches Traffic Drops Better?

By Torstein Skulbru ·

GA4 custom alerts (custom insights) are free, built in, and email you when a metric crosses a rule or when Google's model spots an anomaly on one property. Plask is a paid monitor that does the same job across up to 10 properties, with adjustable sensitivity, Slack and Discord delivery, and an AI root cause on each alert. If you have one property and check GA4 anyway, use custom insights. If you have several, or you want to know why a metric moved without opening GA4, Plask is worth $9 a month.

What GA4 custom insights do well

Give credit where it is due. GA4's insights are free, require no third party, and carry no data-sharing question. Google's model is trained on 90 days of daily data, which is longer than Plask's 28-day window and can capture slower seasonal patterns. Hourly evaluation on web streams means a mid-morning tracking outage can be flagged the same day, which a daily monitor cannot do. And the fixed-rule conditions ("Key events less than 5") are exactly right for hard business thresholds where a statistical model is overkill.

If you run one property and you already look at the GA4 Home page a few times a week, stop reading and set up two custom insights.

Where GA4 custom insights fall short

  • No sensitivity control. "Has anomaly" is Google's call. When it is too quiet on a spiky site or too noisy on a steady one, you cannot adjust it. Your fallback is a percentage rule, which does not know that Sundays are always down 30%.
  • Email only, and only to property users. No Slack, Discord, or webhooks. A contractor without property access cannot be notified.
  • Per-property everything. Ten properties means ten configurations, ten separate emails, and no way to notice that all ten dipped at once.
  • Editor role required. Creating insights needs Editor or Administrator on the property, which many analysts and freelancers do not have.
  • No explanation. The email says users are down. Which channel? Which country? You open GA4 and start comparing dimensions by hand.
  • Automated insights are never emailed. Only custom insights notify. The clever automatic detections stay inside the Insights card until you log in.

What Plask does differently

Plask syncs each connected property once a day and evaluates eight core metrics (active users, sessions, new users, screen views, engagement rate, total revenue, transactions, and event count) against a 28-day baseline using a modified Z-score with Median Absolute Deviation. The method is described in plain terms in GA4 anomaly detection explained. What that buys you in day-to-day use:

  • Sensitivity per property. Three levels mapping to Z-score thresholds of 4.0, 3.0, and 2.0. Put the hobby blog on low and the SaaS marketing site on high.
  • Weekday-aware baseline. When enough history exists, a Monday is compared with previous Mondays, which removes the weekly cycle without any manual rules.
  • Delivery where you are. In-app on Free. On Pro, warning and critical alerts by email, and every alert to Slack or Discord via incoming webhook. Setup is pasting a webhook URL, and the URL is stored encrypted.
  • AI root cause. For warning and critical alerts on Pro, Plask fetches the channel, device, and country breakdown for the anomaly day versus the baseline and has Claude Haiku write a short explanation of which segment moved. The numbers are computed server-side; the model only narrates them, and the analysis is labelled as AI-generated so you know to verify it in GA4.
  • Smart prioritization. When several alerts fire together they are ranked by severity, metric importance (revenue and users above engagement), and recency, unread first.
  • Portfolio view. All properties on one page with period-over-period deltas, plus a Monday AI digest that recaps the week's anomalies across the portfolio.

Verdict

Choose GA4 custom insights if you have one or two properties, need hourly detection, or cannot use a third-party tool. Configure a "Has anomaly" insight on active users and a percentage-drop rule on sessions, and you are covered for free.

Choose Plask if you manage several properties, want alerts in Slack or Discord, want to tune how sensitive detection is, or want each alert to arrive with an explanation. Start on the free tier with two properties and upgrade to Pro when you want delivery channels and the AI features. Full feature details are on the anomaly alerts page.

Frequently asked questions

Does Plask replace GA4 custom insights?
Plask replaces the alerting job: it watches the same properties, detects anomalies with a tunable statistical method, and delivers to email, Slack, and Discord with a root cause attached. It does not replace GA4 itself. You still use GA4 for reports and explorations, and there is no harm in leaving your custom insights switched on alongside Plask.
Is Plask more accurate than GA4 anomaly detection?
They use different methods and neither is universally more accurate. GA4 fits a Bayesian state-space model over 90 days of daily data. Plask uses a modified Z-score based on median and MAD over 28 days with a same-weekday comparison. Plask's practical advantage is that you can tune sensitivity per property and see every number behind an alert, so you can make it as strict or loose as your property needs.
Does Plask need Editor access to my GA4 property?
No. Plask uses Google OAuth with the read-only analytics scope. It can list and read the properties your Google account has Viewer access to, and nothing more. OAuth tokens are encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM. GA4 custom insights, by contrast, require the Editor or Administrator role to create.
What does Plask cost compared to GA4 alerts?
GA4 custom insights are free. Plask is free for 2 properties with in-app alerts. Email, Slack, and Discord delivery, AI root cause, the weekly digest, and up to 10 properties are on the Pro plan at $9/mo or $79/yr.
